eliotwaugh: (ooh | you have piqued my curiosity)
Here are some things about Eliot that would catch someone's attention upon meeting him:

~He is tall and skinny (6'1"ish), a bony noodle who does not value good nutrition.
~He has a congenital deformity of his lower jaw, causing it to stick out at an awkward angle; his smile looks like a grimace.
~Occasionally wears glasses, doesn't actually need them.
~Dresses in a very dapper style that is also conspicuously queer but not to the point of being flamboyant. [style refs to come]
~He's a smoker, Merits are his brand.
~Affects a transatlantic accent; when he's especially drunk, relaxed around someone, or angry, his native Oregon accent comes through.
~His hair is perfect.

Short answer: I do what I want, Thor.

Longer answer: While there are many things I love about this series, and also many things that horrify me, one minor but persistent annoyance is that basically all the characters are white. Lev Grossman is great at writing some things, and in other areas, like this, he falls into a classic white people trap of writing whiteness as default. Main characters are written with descriptions of their hairstyles, fashion choices, personalities, demeanors, etc, and occasionally described (usually in moments of emotional tension) with that lazy whiteness-codeword, "pale." There are, however, a handful of minor characters who are clearly designated as people of color, usually though some sort of ethnic name construction or foody/earthy color description of their skintone. Which, I should not have to say, is hella gross.

It is not inconceivable (and indeed, SHOULD not be) that a bullied gay kid from Oregon who grew up to wear a thick armor of pride and style superiority might also be a person of color. Why do all the characters we care about need to be white, especially since a large part of the books is a focus on people who are marginalized and feel like they don't have a place in the dominant cultural narrative?

Eliot in particular comes from a background of oppression, and a driving force in his character's development is his desire to acquire and embody the trappings of privilege. He consciously performs (and queers) an air of posh snobbery, and Quentin certainly finds it confusing and off-putting before he gets to know Eliot (Good, Quentin, people don't exist for your comfort).

freaking therefore, I headcanon and write Eliot as Black. He's already fairly tokenized in the canon, and in my writing of his character I want to explore how he both loves his Brakebills friends for accepting him and, on another level, resents them a bit for how they cannot fully understand his experience. Eliot was/is/will have been the High King of Fillory, and he is no one's sidekick.

Eliot is a magician, and in his canon universe magic is set up to work in a...less fantasy, more science fiction way than I usually see it portrayed. This and the fact that like no one has read these books means Eliot's type of magic requires a hefty bit of explanation. Here goes.

Oh good gravy I wrote a huge giant essay. )

[Out Of Character]
Backtagging with this character: of course!
Threadhopping with this character: Ask first?
Fourthwalling: All the damn time
Canon puncture: who would even know this? but also please don't, Eliot has enough to drink about already.
Offensive subjects: (elaborate, especially if something should be avoided)

[In Character]
Sexual/romantic orientation: grayromantic homosexual. One time he reportedly hooked up with his best friend/mean-girl-gal-pal Janet, but it was just the once and it was probably awful
Hugging this character: He's not really the hugging type unless he's drunk, in which case WATCH OUT.
Flirting with this character: oh LORD yes, he will either flirt right back or side-eye the hell out of your efforts. Either way, we're all entertained!
Giving this character a kiss: Eliot is awkward at kisses and can be self-conscious about it, so, ask first.
Something more intimate: Eliot is also fond of casual hookups, which I might be comfortable threading, or partially threading, eh it depends on the circumstances I guess? Just let's talk about it forever and ever and plan the heck out of it.
Relationships: This boy needs one, either romantic or a solid close friendship or something, because likely that will help get his life on track a little.
Dub-con/non-con/sexual assault: Naaah. he's had some bad experiences with dubious consent and also doing kink in an unhealthy way, but at this point in his arc it is informed consent all the way.
Fighting with this character: Well he does have a tendency to be mean and loud, so, you know, arguments are going to happen. If things get physical he'd rather use magic than resort to fisticuffs, but at this point in his life he's more likely to run away instead of triumphing gloriously.
Injuring this character: Talk to me about it, but yeah he can get scraped up and such.
Killing this character: no please!
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: go right ahead, but be prepared for a mess
eliotwaugh: (omg what | genuine laughter)
